Slowing down, refining your routines and preparing for change

How often do you actually look at the moon? Do you take the time to notice its difference phases, its size, its imprint against the sky? This week I’ve woken up early and gazed at the moon as it slowly waned, from a perfect crescent to a slither and then to dark.
In Mysteries of the Dark Moon, Demetra George writes ‘we sometimes need to let go, withdraw, pull inward and renew ourselves in the dark stillness of other transitions’. There are various times throughout the year and our lives when we will experience the need for this, but one regular period to slow down, go inward and reflect is in the days leading up to the dark/new moon. She continues: ‘we can use the intrinsic function of the dark times for healing and renewal. When we resist this inward motion in our psyche, then anxiety, stress, and fear are more likely to take hold of our emotions’.
Astrology of the New Moon in Virgo: Uranus and Eclipses
This New Moon is at 0 degrees Virgo and square to Uranus in Gemini. In 2 weeks we will have a Lunar Eclipse in Pisces, then end Virgo season with a Solar Eclipse at 29 degrees Virgo. All of this is to say that this is not your ordinary New Moon in Virgo.
Uranus shakes things up. It brings change, innovation. Eclipses tend to bring about changes in our lives, and often these things can happen quite swiftly. Basically it’s like a cosmic powerup. It’s almost like the Universe has been listening to our inner being and swoops in to give us a general cleanup and point us in the direction we want to go. A Full Moon/Lunar eclipse brings an end to something, and a New Moon/Solar eclipse brings a new beginning.
All this is to say is that in the next 4–6 weeks there is an opportunity for you to make the changes you wish to make. And if you don’t take the leap, then perhaps life will find a way to make the change for you. Uranus, eclipses—they just create the external change that your internal self has been wanting and dreaming of, but hasn’t yet had the courage to make. When we don’t feel ready for these changes, that’s when we can feel off-balance and like everything is crashing down around us.
So, how do we get ready? By regularly checking in with ourselves, noticing our thoughts, feelings and actions, and taking time for self-healing and renewal.
Virgo season: being your most authentic self
How do you feel when you are most authentically you? If you’re not sure, Virgo season is a chance to find out—to uncover your radiant, authentic self. Virgo’s focus on refinement can help you process, cleanse and purify your actions. It can help you become more devoted to yourself, to honour who you are and cultivate internal validation and acceptance.
And so, if you haven’t already this week, take some time out with yourself. Find a quiet spot, grab your journal, perhaps make a nice cup of tea or cacao. Take some deep breaths to ground yourself and quiet your mind. Bring your attention to your heart space, and ask yourself:
How is my heart, in this moment?
Is that how I’d like to feel? If not, how do I want to feel?
How can I purify my intentions and actions so I can feel the way I want to feel?
What can I do to help protect myself from taking on the energy of outside influences?
Once I feel good within myself, how can I support and inspire others to feel good about themselves?
Allow your answers to come from the heart. Don’t let your mind edit them. Perhaps you don’t know the answers yet, which is fine. Just let yourself write freely and honestly.
Use this New Moon to rest, to fan the flames of devotion to self. Purify your diet, your actions, your thoughts, your routine so you feel the way you want to feel. And once these internal shifts are in place, watch your outer world change to match.
