Growing Beyond the Shell: The Capricorn Full Moon, Mercury Retrograde and Jupiter in Leo

There is a lot happening in the skies all at once.

A Full Moon in Capricorn.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer.

Jupiter entering Leo.

Three very different energies asking us three different (yet connected) questions.

  • What are you building?

  • What makes you feel safe?

  • Are you allowing yourself to be seen?

Let’s start with Mercury retrograde in Cancer. (For more on Mercury retrograde in general, head here.)

Cancer is often described as the nurturer of the zodiac. It seeks familiarity, safety and the people and places that feel like home. It is an instinct we have to create spaces that feel safe and nourishing, where we feel like we can be ourselves. We stay cosy in our shells, safe. And we fiercely protect our sense of safety.

But there comes a point where the shell that once protected us becomes the thing that keeps us small.

Growth rarely happens inside our comfort zone. We need to stretch ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Growth can feel uncomfortable, but there also comes a time when staying where we are feels just as uncomfortable—if not more so.

That doesn't mean we need to throw ourselves into the deep end. It doesn't mean forcing ourselves into constant hustle or believing that bigger is always better. It is finding ways to support ourselves so that on a base level our nervous system feels safe as we take the steps we need to take.

Collectively we are going through immense change. We are having to take a hard look at how we’ve been doing things, and the people we are allowing to be our leaders.

In late 2019/early 2020 I sat in astrology webinars listening to astrologers describe the huge shifts humanity would experience over the coming decades. They compared this period to previous moments in history that completely reshaped society.

At the time it all sounded fascinating (and a little romantic—who wouldn’t want to be part of the renaissance 2.0?).

Then it all happened.

A pandemic.

Wars.

The cost of living rising.

The constant feeling that the ground beneath us keeps moving.

It can feel tempting to retreat into our own little bubble until it all settles down. But eventually we have to ask ourselves: Am I practising self-care, or am I hiding?

At the opposite end of the zodiac, the Capricorn Full Moon invites us to look honestly at our ambitions.

Ambitions change. The dreams you had at twenty-five might not be the dreams you have at forty-five. Success might no longer look like climbing a ladder or proving something to the world.

It might look like creating a slower life.

Having more freedom.

Building meaningful work.

Feeling connected to yourself.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer asks us to review what helps us feel emotionally safe. Where are you seeking comfort? And perhaps more importantly, where has comfort quietly become avoidance?

Then, just as we're reflecting on all of this, Jupiter moves into Leo. Leo reminds us that life isn't only about responsibility and achievement. It's about joy. Creativity. Play. Generosity. Self-expression. Being willing to take up space without apologising for it.

Maybe the next version of you doesn't need to leap into an entirely different life. Maybe it simply needs a slightly bigger shell.

Think of a hermit crab. As it grows, it doesn't abandon safety altogether. It simply finds a shell that better fits who it has become.

Perhaps that's what growth can look like for us too. Growing in ways that still allow us to feel grounded. Feeling safe enough to stretch to the next step rather than always feeling like you must take a giant leap.

So as these astrological shifts unfold, ask yourself,

'What is one way I can expand beyond the shell that no longer fits?'

Because your ambition is probably still there. It may just have matured. It may now be asking you to create a life that values meaning over achievement, creativity over perfection and authenticity over expectation.

Reflection

As you move through this Full Moon, Mercury retrograde and Jupiter's shift into Leo, ask yourself:

  • Where am I staying small because it feels familiar?

  • What kind of life actually feels meaningful to me now?

  • How can I make growth feel safe rather than overwhelming?

  • Where could I invite a little more creativity, joy and play into my life?

The exact time of the Full Moon in Capricorn is:

Melbourne: 30 June @ 9.56am

London: 20 June @ 12.56am

New York: 29 June @ 7.56pm

Mercury will begin its retrograde at 26ºCancer on 29/30 June (depending on time zone) and finish at 16ºCancer on 23/24 July.
