Kidney Meridian Yin Yoga: TCM, the Water Element and Nervous System Balance

Backlit woman in a field twirls a flowing orange scarf at sunset, creating a dreamy, joyful scene.

I work with meridian lines through yin yoga and EFT.

If you’re not familiar with meridians, they come from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and are understood as energy channels in the body—like pathways that life force flows through.

In yin yoga, different shapes target different meridians in the body. In EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), we tap on specific meridian points to support emotional release and nervous system regulation.

What I also find really beautiful is that there’s a natural connection between the meridian system and astrology—between the themes of each meridian line and planetary or zodiac archetypes.

Each meridian is connected to a season, an element, and specific emotional patterns.

The Kidney Meridian

  • Element: Water

  • Quality: Yin

  • Daily Time: 5–7pm

  • Season: Winter

  • It Starts under our feet, runs along the legs, torso and ends under the collarbone

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Kidneys are seen as the storehouse of our deepest energy — often called Jing, or essence energy. This is our foundational vitality. It supports our energy, resilience, motivation, and our ability to move through life with direction and purpose.

When Kidney energy is balanced, we tend to feel grounded, steady and connected to ourselves. When it’s depleted—often through chronic stress, burnout, fear, overwork, or lack of rest—we might notice:

  • fatigue or low energy

  • lack of motivation or drive

  • difficulty following through on plans

  • feeling anxious, flat, or disconnected from yourself

  • a sense of depletion or being 'stuck'

But when it’s supported and balanced, something shifts:

Balanced Kidney energy supports confidence, steadiness, and authenticity — the feeling of being anchored in who you are.

Working with Kidney Energy Across Modalities

What I find really interesting is how we can work with the kidney meridian across different healing and reflective practices.

The Kidney Meridian in Astrology

In astrology, we can explore these same themes through archetypes like the Moon and Venus — and signs like Cancer and Taurus.

Through meditation, reflection, and journalling, we can connect with emotional needs, personal values, and what helps us feel safe, nourished, and secure within ourselves.

The Kidney Meridian in EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)

In EFT, we can gently tap into these patterns directly in the body, working with feelings of self-worth, insecurity, fear, and emotional safety. This helps regulate the nervous system while also releasing emotional charge around these experiences.

The Kidney Meridian in Yin Yoga

In yin yoga, we work physically with the Kidney meridian through slow, supported shapes that encourage deep release and nervous system downregulation.

Some beautiful Kidney-supporting poses include:

  • Butterfly

  • Child’s Pose

  • Forward Fold

  • Sphinx/Seal

  • Saddle/half saddle

A Return to Yourself

Across all of these modalities—yin yoga, EFT, astrology and meridian theory—there’s a shared thread.

We are not trying to become someone new. We are learning how to come back to ourselves.

To restore what has been depleted.

To reconnect with our inner steadiness.

To remember what it feels like to be anchored in who we are.

And maybe that’s what all of this work is really pointing us toward: a quieter system, a clearer sense of self and a more authentic way of being.
